Mindful Mondays: Electronic Dance Music and it’s growing audience

“Mindful Mondays” will be curated posts that have a little bit more of my own voice included. This week’s topic is my perspective on the facts and realities of this new Electronic Dance Music(EDM) movement. This is appropriate to set the stage for a multi-source story I will be putting together that will touch on reasons and opinions of students and experts enveloped in the culture as well.

Creators and industry leaders of this music culture may consider Electronic music as being “dumbed down“, or in other words, not what it used to be. Avid listeners of this modern day musical movement have been bashing on its main stream presence for several years. The internet has a big say in this. No longer are record labels the source of million dollar musical creations, but EDM gives the younger generation a unique opportunity to start something of their own.

I have several friends that can book a gig as an EDM DJ, but if they were to spin hip-hop, it wouldn’t attract half the number of people. Electronic Dance Music requires a sense of rhythm and creativity. It may sound like a jumble of noise to some, but to others, its melodies can mix with a beat that can be used to create a perfect mashup. Hip-hop is not flexible; you cannot mix hip-hop music with EDM and still call it hip-hop, but you can definitely call it a form of EDM. As we’ve noticed from radio airplay, hip-hop artists that have teamed up with DJs like David Guetta have topped the Billboard charts with songs like “Where Them Girls At” featuring hip-hop artists Nicki Minaj and Flo Rida as well as “Without You” featuring R&B artist, Usher.

I have noticed that Coachella is a common festival that many critics of the EDM scene tend to refer to. Coachella has been known to follow the most current trends in music and while its last festival featured Dubstep DJ, Skrillex, it’s been building its audience with a whole new genre.

DJS are getting paid and topping Billboard charts, radio stations are fueling their existence, and the younger generation is feeding into what is called the next big change in the music industry.
